On the reform of PE curricula of Lanbowan School of Zhongshan Experimental School
In June 1999, a Decision of the State Council on Deepening Education Reform and Fully Promoting Quality Oriented Education was released, which clearly pointed out, "a healthy physique is the basic precondition for the youth to serve the motherland and the people, and the reflection of the exuberant vitality of Chinese people. The school's education shall set up a guiding ideology which puts health at the top position, indeed strengthen PE work, and make students master basic sports skills and form a good habit of taking exercise".
Lanbowan School has insisted on the guiding ideology that puts health on the top position, implemented a sunshine PE program, deepened the reform on PE curricula. By improving the teaching quality of PE class, expanding the school's sports item and cultivating a sportsmanship and a health philosophy among the students, it will fully implement the education policy and try to improve the physical health condition of the students.
Strengthening physique, seeking high efficiency in PE class
Based on a comprehensive and deep teaching survey, the school organizes teaching and research groups of the subject to analyze the low efficient phenomena in PE classroom teaching such as insufficient exercise, unscientific training and loose teaching organization. Referring to the requirements of PE curriculum standard, it has raised questions, "If students do not sweat in PE class, will they sweat in Chinese class? If students do not take enough exercise in PE class, will you make their heart beat at a rate of 160 times in a math class?" It will guide PE teachers to absorb a correct education philosophy, confirm the core values in the teaching of the subject, regulate teaching behavior, strengthen the conventional management of PE curricula and try to enhance the teaching efficiency of PE class.
Targeting the common physical problems among primary school students at present such as "softness (soft muscle and weakness)", "hardness (hard joint ligament and poor suppleness)", "clumsiness (a clumsy body, poor development of small muscle group)", "dizziness (vestibular organs lacking in exercise, poor balance). The school requires that PE teaching should innovate the teaching mode of "taking exercise in each class". Each PE class should assign certain teaching time to train the stamina of students from six areas, namely, strength, speed, stamina, sensitiveness, flexibility and balance and make the students really move in PE class.
Combined with the annual physique health test items and standards for primary school students, the PE teaching of each grade should make full use of time, site and equipment, carry out pertinent teaching and training based on "exercising in each class", actively explore the funny game based "exercising in each class", to enhance the interest of students in body-building and promote the efficiency of PE class.
Mastering skills, extension programs for choice
Why has "walking" become the most popular form of sports among the public? As interpreted by a PE official, it's because that most people only know how to "walk", but know no other sports. On a parents meeting of the school, the host made a survey among the parents. Less than 10% of the parents surveyed said that they are professional in one or two sports and can insist on the sports every week. Lack of athletic skills and unscientific exercising methods are not only the bottleneck of invigorating health effectively, but also an important restraining factor for the cultivation of sports habits. The main channel for mastering sports skills is still the PE in school.
The management team of Lanbowan School has carefully analyzed the current status of sports skills cultivation in the current physical education in school, put forward diversified ideas for the curriculum and teaching of PE, actively introduced extension programs, carried out popularized teaching by stages, trying to enable the students to explore their own sports hobbies in the experience of different extension programs, establish their advantages in sports and gradually develop stable sports hobbies.
In the recent five years, the school has successively cooperated with professional teams and introduced items such as fancy rope skipping, badminton, swimming and soccer. With classroom as teaching unit, the PE will be designed by stages from Grade One to Grade Four. The school has systematically carried out the basic skills teaching activities of the above items and gradually popularized athletic skills among the students. The school has actively explored and kept overcoming difficulties encountered in areas such as expenditure, faculty, venues and time. Professional coaches are appointed and sent by partners. And the school offers remuneration and subsidy to them and assign PE teachers or head teachers of the school to assist the organizing of teaching. Teaching resources are explored actively by making a full use of the idle time of the professional swimming pool outside the campus and the school's own bus.

The annual sunshine sports event has been held for 12 years. Having extended from simply a sports competition to the spread of sports culture, developing from a two-day competition to a one-month all-round competition, teachers and students, parents and children enjoy the sports together. Innovation has been achieved in sports apparatus. New concepts and new measures have been introduced to create an increasingly strong atmosphere of sports and help the students develop more comprehensive sports experience.
Over the years, under the guiding ideology of "health comes first", the sports work of the school has been geared to all students, focused on strengthening the physique of students, placed emphasis on athletic skills and achieved a long-term progress. The popularized extension program strategy has enhanced the level of competitive events. The school's badminton team, swimming team and soccer team have participated in the competitions at district and city levels and made an excellent performance. While the school's sports work has developed as a whole, its advantages in specific items have been established gradually.
Education that has not paid attention to physical education is not complete. A school that has not implemented physical education is not a responsible school.
